Review- NOT FOR A GRADE

World Pie Championship jury member John Young poses with two scotch pies during the judging of the competition in Dunfermline, Scotland.
This month at the Sugar bakery located on burnt rode Larry White is holding up two mini cherry pies. Last year the bakery was swarming in with black smoke that made the bakery look like darkness has taken over.

  1. The rule of thirds is when a picture is not directly in the middle and
  2. Balancing elements is when there is a equal amount of objects on both sides of the picture.
  3. Leading lines is when the eye is following something in the photo like a winding road.
  4. Symmetry and patterns (repetition) is finding elements that repeat in a photo like similar colors or lines of a fence.
  5. Viewpoint can create a dramatic effect based on where you (the photographer) position yourself.
  6. Backgound is what the subject is in front of.
  7. Create depth is requires no work, simply taking the photo and letting the reader explore.
  8. Framing is when the main object is framed by objects in the foreground.
  9. Cropping is cutting off some of the photo to make it better.
  10. Mergers and avoiding them is when you make sure a color of an object isn't blending in with another object.  There's near mergers (colors/shades) and border mergers when part of the objects is cut off in the photo.
3.
  • Aperture is how big or small the opening is.  It's also known as the F-stop.
  • Shutter Speed is how long the exposure is open or how fast.  Do fast to capture motion.
  • ISO measures the sensitivity of the film.  Higher ISO are used in darker settings.  Higher ISOs create grainier images.
4. Manipulating a photo is NOT ok if it changes the meaning of a photo.  There are also rules about changing the colors.  It's ok to crop photos, but don't leave off an important part of a photo.  You can lighten or darken a photo if it doesn't change the meaning.

5.
Environmental portraits are where background or environment is included in the photo and it helps complete the story by including it.  like a photo of a fireman or the President in the White House.
Self is taking a picture of yourself.
Casual can be posed or unposed. The setting could be outdoors and natural environment vs. a studio.

6.
Exposure - amount of light that's in a photo.  Determined by shutter speed and aperture.
Depth of Field is distance between the the objects up front and behind them and how sharp or blurry they further things are.
Focal Length is the distance between the center of a lens or curved mirror and its focus.

7.Early magazine covers - were drawings or illustrations because cameras didn't exist or weren't around much.
Poster - unique image  and not too many words so it could be used as a poster.  A photo.
Married to Type - words surround the photo
Forest of Words - words are everywhere and distract from the subject
